What is an A1c test? For people who have diabetes, an A1c test shows your average blood sugar level over the past 3 months. The results give an overall picture of how well your treatment plan is working. For most people with diabetes, the goal is to keep the A1c level less than 7%.

How often should those with diabetes get their A1c tested? If you have diabetes, you should get tested at least two to three times a year to see how well your treatment plan is working.

How is the A1c test administered? Blood is drawn with a simple finger prick and the lab test is completed within the clinic. Results are discussed in approximately five minutes. We also review your medical history and check vital signs as part of the test.

What are the health effects of having an elevated A1c level? An elevated A1c level can put people with diabetes at more risk for developing complications related to the disease.

These risks include:
• Vision loss and blindness from damage to the retina of the eye
• Loss of kidney function that can lead to the need for chronic kidney dialysis
• Heart disease, heart attack or stroke
• Circulation problems that could lead to amputation
• Pain, tingling, numbness and weakness in the legs and feet
• Erectile dysfunction (impotence)
