The DIA Offers Free Admissions To Residents

The Detroit Institute of Arts

The Detroit Institute of Arts’ (DIA) presents the next round of Inside|Out, which brings reproductions of paintings from its stellar collection to the streets and parks of greater metro Detroit. Inside|Out connects with audiences outside museum walls in a grand, open-air gallery and is sponsored by DTE Energy Foundation.
The reproductions will come down from their current locations and be installed in 11 new communities, where they will be on view from September until the end of November. They include Birmingham; Franklin; Armada; Detroit’s Eastern Market, Riverfront and Dequindre Cut; Holly; Milford; Warren; Lake Orion; Oxford; Belleville; and Macomb Township.
Each community will have several reproductions clustered within walking or bike-riding distance. While exact locations are known for Detroit, decisions are currently being made regarding venues in other cities. Once all the locations are determined, they will be featured on an interactive map on the DIA’s website, www.dia.org.
"Once again, we are delighted with the public’s response,” said Graham W. J. Beal, DIA director. “There is a genuine sense of community ownership around the installations, and many residents have come to the DIA to see ‘their’ actual works of art. We are happy to be able to continue the momentum with the new installations this fall.”
DTE Energy Foundation is sponsoring Inside|Out for 2011. "This innovative project not only makes the DIA's collection more accessible to the public, but it excites, inspires and engages thousands of people along the way," said Fred Shell, president of DTE Energy Foundation. "We are proud to continue our long-term support of the DIA and to be part of bringing art to the places people live, work, and play."
The DIA will offer residents of participating communities free museum admission (excludes special ticketed exhibitions and programs) to a Family Sunday so that they can experience “their” works of art in person and enjoy the variety of activities the museum offers. Dates for each community’s free day are:
Detroit                                 October 16
Warren                                October 23
Armada                               October 30
Birmingham and Franklin      November 6
Holly and Milford                  November 20
Belleville                             November 27
Participating communities will plan activities centered around the installations. Previous events have included a wine-tasting bus tour, bike and walking tours, talks at local libraries, and a DIA presence at annual festivals. This fall, the DIA will continue tailoring events that capture the unique character of each community, including a bicycle tour in Detroit that begins and ends at the DIA.
